REVIEWS / REZENSIONEN...Doran/Studer/Burri/Magnenat's latest release has grown and grown in my estimation since I rashly mistook it for quirky jazz-rock-fusion some months ago. I wan't wrong about the fusion though, "only" the way it's deployed to get to some superbly intricate free improv. You can hear the stirrings of this unexpected juxtaposition on the 1986 Christy Doran (guitar) and Fredy Studer (percussion) outing called RED TWIST & TUNED ARROW (ECM 1342) with improv guitarist Stephan Wittwer. MUSIK FUR ZWEI KONTRABÄSSE, GITARRE & SCHLAGZEUG with its two atmospheric, rather than overtly rhythmic, double basses (Bobby Burri and Olivier Magnenat), is less idiomatic and takes even greater liberties with structure. The eight pieces rejoice in a consistently surprising breakdown of expectations, appearing to return by chance to their thematic beginnings.
